Sustainability Case Study: We Create Value to Society by Empowering People Worldwide with Free Vocational Training

May 06, 2020

Throughout our global network, SGS is involved with a wide variety of sustainability initiatives that are helping to enable a better, safer and interconnected world. We will be examining some of these initiatives and how they create value to society. Here, we take a look at our SGS Academy for the Community program, which supports local economic development by enhancing access to and quality of employment.

SGS Academy for the Community helps to deliver high-quality technical training, free of charge, to people earning less than the living wage in communities where we operate. In 2019, we supported educational projects around the world – in Chile, Taiwan, South Africa and India.

In India, SGS Academy for the Community has teamed up with the Heart for India Foundation to provide women living below the poverty line with essential training for jobs in the healthcare and education sectors. The program aims to empower these women by enhancing their skills and facilitating their access to employment.

Over a 6- to 12-month period, students receive classroom-style teaching and a salaried work placement in their chosen field. Most of the women in the program are between 18 and 20 years old. However, women of all ages, with different life experiences, have been accepted.
